Our internships are volunteer based and unpaid, which is why we only ask our interns to serve a minimum of 20 hours/week for 10 weeks. Pioneers does provide housing for interns who live outside of Orlando. Apartment rentals in our area range anywhere from $2,500 to $3,500 a month, and these high rates would make even paid internships difficult. Free housing makes this internship possible for interns each summer.
Some other ways our interns have financially prepared themselves for the summer are:
- Applying for an internship scholarship through their college. If you are a student, we encourage you to check if your school offers that opportunity.
- Raising personal support through their local church.
- Working part-time and saving before the intern program or working part-time while serving in the intern program.
In addition, we do everything we can to invest and show appreciation to our interns. Each intern receives thank you gifts, a social outing and lunches during Orientation week and Intern Appreciation Week, an end of program celebration and a great professional experience to put on your resume.
*NOTE: The IRS considers any housing payments made by businesses or nonprofit organizations as taxable income. It is the responsibility of the intern to determine how much tax they owe and make payment to the IRS in the following year.
